Clinical Skills Training

Clinical skills training is a key component of the overall training programme. It is recognised that for a psychiatrist to be well rounded and clinically proficient explicit scrutiny and development of their clinical performance is a vital part of training. These skills are assessed by a continuous process (work place based assessments) and external exams (the Clinical Assessment of Skills and Competencies set by the Royal College of Psychiatrists).

The Maudsley Training Programme offers one full day every month with a focus on clinical skills development. In order to allow for smaller group work, these sessions are borough based (in Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham, Croydon and Oxleas) and organised by the local Clinical Tutors. The exact content of these days varies to some degree between the boroughs but all involve lengthy scenario-based sessions (simulation learning) using experienced actors to allow trainees to improve their clinical skills with the advice and support of teachers and peers. Also included in these training days are opportunities to do journal club and case presentations as well as audit sessions and talks from external speakers.
