Our core psychotherapy training programme offers an exciting opportunity to develop skills in a range of evidence-based psychotherapy approaches. The programme is delivered primarily at the Maudsley Psychotherapy Service (MPS), located in the Outpatients Department of the Maudsley Hospital. This is a multimodal and multi-professional service that provides training in individual and group psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), family and couple therapy, and perinatal psychotherapy.
The MPS seeks to provide high quality clinical treatment, education and research into new applications of psychotherapy and falls under the Mood Anxiety and Personality Clinical Academic Group (MAP CAG) at the South London and Maudsley Foundation Trust (SLaM).
The core psychotherapy training programme includes an academic curriculum with lectures at the Institute of Psychiatry, case-based discussion groups led by consultants in psychotherapy, and supervision of psychotherapy cases to enable trainees to fulfil the Royal College of Psychiatrists competency curriculum and to be eligible to sit the clinical section of the membership exam. Comprehensive information about the current training requirements is available at the Royal College of Psychiatrists website.
In addition, there are opportunities for core trainees in their second or third year (CT2 or CT3) to do six-month posts in psychotherapy to have more in-depth experience. In these posts, trainees will be provided with experience of assessing, formulating and treating patients with complex presentations of depression, anxiety and personality disorders, using different treatment modalities. In the CBT modality, core trainees will have the opportunity to work within the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service. They will also participate in academic seminars, CBT journal clubs and clinical meetings within the MPS.
