Trainees have two types of supervision: one with a clinical supervisor who will provide day-to-day oversight in the work-place, training trainees in clinical skills and knowledge relevant to their area of practice, and supporting professional good practice, and the other with a separate educational supervisor who takes a longer-term view of the trainee’s educational needs and provides guidance, assessment and intervention if difficulties arise.
Supervision is a collaborative process with the supervisor helping the trainee define and understand their further needs and providing guidance and direction to achieve the educational goals and what we know from research studies is that effective supervision is dependent on the quality of the relationship between supervisor and trainee, improves trainee development (especially skills acquisition) and improves patient outcomes. With this in mind, our Clinical and Educational Supervisors are trained in the appropriate appraisal, coaching and mentoring skills needed to be an effective supervisor, and trainee’s feedback on their experiences in supervision is regularly sought.
